"Ok, deep breaths, in, out, in, out."

You stood in front of Kanda's door with fingers clenched, while your vision swam. Trembling, you reached for the doorknob and prayed that it was locked.

It wasn't... Well, damn.

You breathed a disheartened sigh and mustered up the courage you knew you needed to get through these next few minutes. You pushed the door open slowly and crept into the inky darkness of Kanda's room. As you entered, you were surprised by the silence. After shutting the door behind you, there wasn't a single noise in the room. All you could hear was your own breathing, which sounded like trumpets in a graveyard compared to the rooms stifling quiet.

After patiently waiting for your eyes to adjust to the gloom, you slid off your shoes, and used your toes to push them against the adjacent wall. Ever so delicately, you tip toed across the floor, until you reached the bedside of slumbering Kanda, deep in dreamland. You stared at his motionless figure for a long while, going over the words you had rehearsed in your head for this very moment.

Sighing one last time, you knelt down next to Kanda's bed and ever so gently poked him in the stomach.

"Ano... Kanda? Kanda? I hate to bother you, but could you please wake up? Kanda?"

You gave him a small delicate shake, and continued to quietly call his name. He didn't respond.

"Kanda?" Your voice got wobbly. "Please wake up..." You continued to shake him, only harder and faster. Still, there was no response. You poked him again, only this poke was more of a sharp jab.

You gasped as Kanda's hand darted out from beneath his sheets and grabbed your throat. His large palm pressed tightly against your skin, squeezing hard enough to cut off your air supply.

"Ka.... Urn... Kan... Kanda!"

With your windpipe blocked, you started seeing stars, while his fingers crushed you. Already on your knees, you grabbed Kanda's wrist, attempting to pry his iron grip off of you. Then Kanda sat up with a start, simultaneously releasing you. He turned towards you, a wild disoriented look in his blue eyes.

"(Name)..." The cloudiness cleared from his eyes as he recognized your face. He noticed the look of panic in your eye, while you sat, huffing and puffing, on the floor beside his bed. He looked down at his hand, which was still trembling, and looked back up at you and the bruises starting to form on your throat.

"Did I... Did I do that?" Understanding slowly seeps in, and you flinched as he moved towards you.

"(Name), I'm so sorry," Kanda said. "It was a pretty horrific dream this time."

"It's ok," you wheezed, even though it was definitely NOT ok. Kanda's nightmares had been plaguing the entirety of the Black Order for a few months now, and it had gotten to the point where everyone was practically terrified. Due to Kanda's frequent missions, his sleep habits left much to be desired. Between his afternoon cat naps and black outs during dinner, it was no wonder the long haired exorcist could never sleep at night. And what's worse, it was YOUR job to help get his sleep schedule back on track.

Had it been, say, Lenalee or Lavi who needed your help, you would have happily volunteered your services. But no, it was Kanda, who not only couldn't sleep at night, but when awoken, turned into an absolute savage.

The first time you woke him during a 2pm snooze in the Order's library, you nearly lost your hand. Had Allen-kun's quick reflexes not kicked in and yanked you to safety, you would have been maimed beyond repair, and the last thing you wanted was some weirdo freak hand like Allen-kun.

This time, however, you were lucky.

You managed to escape this encounter with nothing but a few bruises, far less damage than usual. With a final sigh, you rose to your feet.

"You know, Kanda-kun, I don't know how much longer I can do this. Your nightmares from hell have almost gotten me killed more than a few times. Maybe you should just accept your erratic sleep habits and move on."

"Not an option, unfortunately, (Name). I can't function properly during a mission or assignment if I'm tired all the time. Please, don't quit on me now."

You looked at Kanda's tired eyes and messy "just-woke-up" hair and smiled. You couldn't say no to that face. No matter what he asked, you could never say no to that face.

"Alright, fine," you finally said. Kanda's relieved look was all the consolation you needed.

"Arigatō, (Name)."

~**~ 2 Month Time Skip ~**~

Why, Kami-sama, why? Why hath you forsaken me?

You pulled out a pair of scissors a snip snip snipped your hair. Well, the side that hadn't already been cut by Kanda's dream-rage fueled katana.

You could have taken a finger. Or broken a bone or two. But my HAIR? My goddamn glorious fuckin' hair?

You knew being angry wasn't going to solve anything. But then again, being productive hadn't solved anything either. Stopping Kanda from falling asleep was like trying to stop a bear attack with a candy cane: impossible. And quickly waking him after he went down? Another impossibility. Never in your life had you seen such a sound sleeper.

It was like his mind teleported to a different dimension where nothing could reach him. Waiting for him to wake up naturally could take hours on end, so the only solution was to keep banging pots together and shaking him until he snapped out of his slumber.

And what happen then? Attack of the furious Kanda.

And this time, the casualty wasn't an innocent bystander or a broken wrist. No, this time, it was your long silky (h/c) hair. A tear ran down your cheek, a product of your distraught over your recent loss and the bubbling pot of frustration that had been boiling for the past few months.

It's time. No matter how much you cared for Kanda, no matter how much you wanted him to get better, you couldn't see the point. I have to tell him I can't do this anymore.

That afternoon, after putting the remains of your soft (h/c) locks in the trash (much to your horror), you walked down to Kanda's room for what you hoped would be the last time. You paused at the door, and knocked, 3 sharp, short raps, just to show you meant business.

Kanda quietly called, "Come in," and you opened the door. There he was, sitting at the little table near his stained glass window, gazing at the lotus flower in its glass hourglass cage.

"Domo," you said breezily, despite the fact that your mission today was anything but breezy.

"You want to talk about something important, don't you." Kanda's eyes never left the pink flower.

"Actually, yeah. It's about-" Kanda cut you off mid sentence.

"My sleep. Yeah, I figured." He looked up at you, and pulled his dark blue hair into his typical ponytail.

"Oh."

"..."

"..."

"So?"

"Ah, right. I just wanted to tell you that as much as I want to help you, I don't think I can. I think you've passed the point of no return on this one, and I'm only hurting more than helping now."

Kanda said nothing. He turned away from you and looked back at the glowing petals of the lotus blossom. After a few moments, you broke the silence. "I'm sorry, it's nothing against you or anything, you know you mean the world to me, it's just-"

Kanda cuts you off again with a wave of his hand. "It's fine. I thought of a new... method, I suppose you could call it. However, it would involve your cooperation." This last line he said gruffly, as if he wasn't exactly sure of his idea.

"A new method? As long as it doesn't involve me losing anymore of my hair, I'm all for it." You smiled dryly and without humor, self consciously touching the bob you had adopted.

"You look fine without it. Honestly, I always thought it was just in the way. Now I can actually see your face, instead of being covered up all the time."

You blushed, not sure if it was a compliment or not and stuttered out, "So this plan you have? What is it?"

"Come back here tonight." Kanda stood up and quickly stepped in front of you, looking down at your face. "You'll understand everything then."

He walked you too the door and ushered you out. "Trust me, you'll get it then."

Then he closed the door before you could respond.

~**~ That Night ~**~

For the 3rd time that day, you walked up to Kanda's door. How is it that I get more and more nervous every time I come here?

You sucked in a long cool breath. Steady, girl. You knocked just once this time, and the door opened immediately. Kanda's face was flushed, and he gave you a quick look up and down, erupting a fire underneath your skin. "You... You came."

Sidebar: (That's what she said)

Kanda looked almost surprised. "Didn't you invite me here? I was supposed to come, right?" You raised an eyebrow.

"Hai, hai, of course... Gomen. Right this way."

He lead you inside and the covers on his bed are pulled back. He turned to you, an expectant look on his stern face. "Get in."

"Eh?"

"The bed." He gestured towards it. "Get in."

"I don't understand..." The fire is lit underneath your skin again.

"What's wrong with you? What part of 'get in' don't you understand?"

"I do understand that but... Why?"

Kanda sighed, and pinched the skin on the bridge of his nose. "To help me sleep obviously."

The whole reason you were here came flooding back to you. "Souka..." Infatuation aside, what he said made sense. As a general rule, sleeping next to someone provided a deeper and better sleep. With a final glance at Kanda, you crawled into the warm sheets and snuggled into the pillow.

Kanda joined you seconds later, and pulled the blankets over the two of you. You hesitated to get close to the exorcist, but realized how unnecessary your worry was. He flipped his body to face you and pulled you into his arms. From there he tangled his fingers in your hair and moved his head so that it sat mere centimeters from your forehead.

His warmth poured into you, and you felt his steady breath on your head, gently blowing your bangs. You finally relaxed, not realizing how stiff and tense you had been. You closed your eyes, matching your breath to his. Within moments, you were asleep.

Neither of you had ever slept so soundly.
